The only thing George Orwell got right in his 1949 look at the future is technology. And the ICT industry should be celebrating everything he got wrong.

This week Saint John’s nerd corps enjoys the pleasure of a fantastic live performance by the Saint John Theatre Company of a new twist on Orwell’s 1984. While this classic story predicts a lot of communication technologies that have now – and in some cases recently – come into fruition, the morbid, frightening use of these technologies by the state or “Big Brother” couldn’t be more wrong. Thankful

The original story tells of how technology was used by a sinister government to put the people under a severe state of control we wouldn’t wish for our dogs. What has really happened is that technology has been used by the people in one of the most democratic movements in the history of humanity to hold our leaders to account. The Saint John Theatre Company performance of 1984 this week is an adaptation that exposes this dramatically different outcome so we can celebrate it. This story belongs to the ICT industry and should allow us to take stock of the world we have helped build and continue to shape.

This is a story worth celebrating and a performance worth taking in. It’s also the first time that our Theatre Company has turned its attention squarely on a story that should be close to the hearts of everyone who works in the thriving ICT sector in our city. This performance is made for The Think City and I can’t wait to take it in…

Performances of 1984 began last evening at the Imperial Theatre and run until Saturday. Tickets can be purchased through the Imperial Theatre.

A flexible and exciting environment awaits.

You may not realize it, but Saint John, NB is actually a treasure trove of ICT talent. There are over 30 ICT firms in Saint John, many of them located in a few block radius of each other in our uptown core. In addition to the ICT firms, many other companies have world-leading ICT departments that employ hundreds of skilled ICT workers. We also have a dynamic ICT start-up scene, where some innovative entrepreneurs are doing some amazing work. Combined with Saint John’s pedigree of successful ICT innovators, and being named one of the World’s Top Seven Most Intelligent Communities, the opportunities for networking and mentorship have never been better. The sector is exciting and growing, but little is known about it to the average Saint Johner as well as those outside our region, outside our province, or outside our nation.

As of the last census, there are well over 8,100 employed in New Brunswick’s ICT sector and of the province’s urban centers, Saint John has the largest concentration with over 2,400 people. These individuals have backgrounds in computer and information systems, computer engineering, information system analysis, database administration, computer programming, web design, application development, network support, testing, software engineering, and much more. While many traditional sectors are shedding jobs and struggling, knowledge based ICT companies continue to grow, add skilled workers and contribute to our community.

NBCC Saint John currently boasts over 50 Java Developer and QA grads in the past three years, and UNB has well over 100 MCSc and BCSc within the same period.

Not only is this urban neighbourhood the ideal collaborative environment for the east coast, but we also boast significant resources within reasonable distances of where we live and work. Within an hour and a half drive, Saint John has access to five university campuses offering curriculums in both of Canada’s official languages in programs that feed into the ICT sector, significant research in IT disciplines, four community colleges offering IT and business programs as well as private colleges and schools. NBCC Saint John currently boasts over 50 Java Developer and QA grads in the past three years, and UNB has well over 100 MCSc and BCSc within the same period. The talent is definitely in the area, it’s just a matter of connecting them to innovative employers.

IT professionals with the right work ethic as well as the knowledge, skills, and abilities required for most ICT positions are available here, and usually at lower labour costs.

Not only is Saint John a great place to find versatile ICT talent, but the labour costs of that talent are of the lowest in Canada. Generally speaking, due to the very low cost of life in the Saint John region, people holding positions in the ICT sector are 20-30% less expensive to hire and keep than those holding the same positions in other major urban centres (Toronto, ON, Vancouver, BC, Calgary, AB, etc.). IT professionals with the right work ethic as well as the knowledge, skills, and abilities required for most ICT positions are available here, and usually at lower labour costs.

Our regional objective is to attract and retain skilled knowledge workers so their ideas and innovations continue to fuel investment and maximize export potential. If anything, work in the ICT sector should appeal to prospective IT students, the region’s many IT companies should appeal to candidates, and the unique labour market should appeal to organizations considering Saint John for either a start-up location or further growth. This really is the place where ICT works.

Smoke stacks for the win.

Saint John is an industrial city. There’s no doubt about that. And it’s true that when people from neighbouring cities picture Saint John in their minds, all they often see is smoke stacks and rail lines.

For those of use who live here, we see the bigger picture. Yes, it’s an industrial city. But what does that really mean? It means Saint John is a city full of hard-working people. We take pride in our ship building past and our modern day oil refining, paper producing and beer making. And now more than ever, we take pride in a whole new growing sector – one that’s less industrial but more innovative than ever – Saint John’s ICT sector.

Perhaps what makes the ICT sector in Saint John so great is the high value we put on building strong partnerships. This isn’t Toronto, folks! It’s not a mad race to the top, squashing anyone who tries to get in our way. In Atlantic Canada, we still recognize the importance of fostering teams of industry allies, working together, supporting each other and sharing in the successes of others.

Take for example the new media communications industry. I’m talking about web designers, social media gurus, graphic artists, video producers, mobile marketers and the like. Saint John doesn’t have a large number of full-service communications companies working independently from one another. Instead, it has a number of smaller marketing companies who each have their own specialties but who also have tight connections with other individuals and small businesses who they work closely with on projects every day. That’s not to say that there’s not competition, but rather that despite competition and perhaps even because of it, there is also a lot of cooperation.

Take for example the recently announced collaboration under one roof called the Creative Soup building. This newly created team environment in uptown Saint John brings together a number of creative companies to serve clients, all from within the same space. Another strong partnership between creative companies is that between DCAM Productions and H2C Online.

“We needed to be able to offer the kind of energy that was going to come from a larger group.” - Jack Butler

DCAM Productions is a video and audio production studio that works with businesses from concept to completion. Services include of course filming and audio recording, but also green screen work, motion graphics, copy writing and video editing. The end result is the production of radio ads, TV commercials and videos for corporate events, promotion and training. H2C Online offers website design, mobile website and app development, search engine optimization and e-mail marketing services.

Just under two years ago, the two companies realized that by working together, they could achieve far more than they were accomplishing on their own. They joined forces by deciding to work out of the same building and by offering each other’s services to their new and existing clients.

The collaboration started with a conversation between business partners Heather Acker and Chantelle Doiron from H2C Online and Heather’s neighbor Jack Butler, who works for DCAM Productions.

Jack remembers the conversation well. “We believed that we as two companies would only go so far on our own,” he said. “We needed to be able to offer the kind of energy that was going to come from a larger group.”

Jack suggested that Heather should speak with Darrell Bainbridge, the owner of DCAM Productions. That’s exactly what she did, and before long the two companies began working on projects together. They weren’t just handing off work to each other, but rather they were developing ideas together, increasing not only the number and type of services they could offer, but also the level of creativity and customer service.

The partnership was a natural fit. “You would never see a good website today that doesn’t have a link to a video. We started to do more of that stuff but we needed a partner that was going to be adept at the internet and building websites and managing websites,” Jack said.

“We work together and have the same focus and the same passions. We’re on an equal playing field, supporting each other’s businesses and business opportunities.” – Heather Acker

Heather agrees. To her, the partnership works because every member of the extended team is on the same page. And that’s because they all communicate well. “We met, talked about our inspirations and where we would like to go, and it was a natural move,” she said. “We work together and have the same focus and the same passions. We’re on an equal playing field, supporting each other’s businesses and business opportunities.”

Jack said the two companies don’t have plans to merge or become one. “Our companies have no agenda except to be successful together. We’re there for the client. Period. We’re there to produce the best work we can do. Period.”

The two partnering companies don’t limit themselves to just working with each other. Not every partner works from the same space, but they all share the same vision of producing the best work possible to meet (and exceed) the expectations of each client they help.

They also have partnerships with printers, designers, animators, graphic artists, photographers, television stations, public relations, branding experts and content writers.

This is just one of dozens of examples of these types of partnerships in Saint John. But if you’re still not convinced that Saint John business people want to work together, check out the Saint John Business Club and the Collaborative Business Referral Group. These tight-knit organizations are built around helping local business people get to know each other better in order to foster partnerships, share business and solve problems together.

Saint John is a city made up of hard working people who value collaboration and partnership. If you’re aware of other companies or organizations sharing resources, clients and brainpower, please leave a comment!

Atlantic Canadians Adopt Mobile Technology with Enthusiasm; Demand for Business to Do the Same is High: study

Ever hear someone optimistically proclaim “Mobile is the future!”? They mean well, but the truth is, Mobile is Now!

First quarter 2012 research commissioned by the Canadian Wireless Telecommunications Association (CWTA) has revealed that Canadians, and especially Atlantic Canadians, are adopting mobile technology at a feverish pace…and we’re hungry for business to do the same.

According to the CWTA, 75% of Canadians own a mobile phone and 48% of those are smartphones; this up from 33% just a year ago. That’s over 26 million Canadians walking around with a cell phone in their pocket!

With smartphone use quickly growing, East Coasters are putting up their hands and asking their favorite companies and brands to engage them with features such as: mobile coupons (36%), mobile payment options at point of sale (30%) and location based information (37%). On the east coast we actually have the highest demand in the country for storing commerce related information on our phone: coupons, loyalty cards (37%), preloaded cash cards, debit and credit cards (24%).

Further statistics available at OurMobilePlanet.com, reveal that Canadians are actively using their smartphone for everything from texting (93%) and browsing the net (74%), to researching products and services (69%) and making purchases (20%). In fact, 79% of us don’t leave home without our smartphone!

Another notable finding by the CWTA – age is not a barrier to adoption of mobile technology. Among those Canadians 55 years and older, 24% of cell phone owners were found to have a smartphone; one in ten are interested in swiping their phone to pay at point of purchase, 38% text, 11% would like to receive coupons and information based on their location and 55% have downloaded apps!

So, the next time you hear someone dreamily say “Mobile is the future”, you’ll be well armed to snap them out of it – mobile is now AND the future. Yes, I’m talking to you Atlantic Canada.

We were aware that Fredericton and Moncton were both promoting themselves as “Smart Cities”, and wanted to find out more, and see if Saint John could make a smart claim. In addition to elevating our own value proposition to potential investors, it would also give Invest NB, our province’s international investment attraction partner, the ability to more widely promote New Brunswick as an intelligent province. That and gain broader awareness for the advancements made in our Port City – much of which local residents either take for granted or know nothing about.

Our original goal was to make it into the Smart 21. Saint John exceeded that goal and made it as a Top Seven Intelligent Community!

“Saint John now joins a recognized international alumni of progressive communities who embrace connectivity and the broadband economy to inspire and support people, ideas and investment.”

In early June, I attended the Intelligent Community Forum Summit in New York City. This is where the intelligent community of the year is named. This year Riverside, California took top honours. Congratulations to them! For Saint John, this was an opportunity for the newly elected Mayor Mel Norton, to take to an international stage with the other Top Seven community leaders to accept the Top Seven award.

In total, eighteen people from New Brunswick made it to all or various parts of the Summit. We had elected officials from the Province of New Brunswick and the City of Saint John, as well as City staff, people from the University of New Brunswick’s Urban and Community Studies Institute, Dalhousie Medicine New Brunswick, Enterprise Saint John and Invest NB. We were given lots of opportunities to share our story and learn about other’s successes and challenges.

We also launched a community video as part of a “community conversation” with Steve Carson and Lou Zacharilla, one of the ICF Co-founders who visited Saint John to learn more about our community. In it, we hear the story of Saint John’ s history and urban renaissance through the eyes of our local film maker, Greg Hemmings, Hemmings House Pictures, with a musical score by the world-renowned Saint John String Quartet. A longer, full length version was also produced, and here it is…

As I think back on the Summit, there are three things which really stand out:

Other communities were there to learn from us – I was asked numerous times for advice on how to go about applying to the ICF, and others found it hard to believe that it was our very first attempt at a Smart 21 or Top Seven designation.

Our Community’s growth strategy, called True Growth, was really ahead of its time – the idea of building a community where people want to live and raise a family as the foundation to economic development – balancing social, cultural, economic and environmental priorities. This is something Saint John adopted over a decade ago that other communities are only just starting to get their heads around.

We need to start spreading the news – both inside and outside our region.

While Saint John is a small city, especially so when compared to New York, that is part of our charm and appeal. When combined with our broadband access, it is an important aspect of why Saint John will become increasingly attractive for people.

You can check out a summary of Saint John captured from the ICF application process on the ICF web site here.

“Saint John’s broadband access and speed is among the widest and fastest in North America. In addition to our connections to the globe through air, land and sea, our highway of glass is what will transport us to prosperity in the new millennium.”

So, lets all join hands in song and raise our voices like Frank Sinatra and start spreading the news!

These little town blues
They are melting away
I’m gonna make a brand new start of it
In old New York

If I can make it there
I’ll make it anywhere
It’s up to you
New York, New York

Da, da, da-da-da. Da, da, da-da-da. Da, da, da-da-da. Da!

Cheers,

Tonight, Louis Zacharilla, the co-founder of the Intelligent Community Forum sets foot in Saint John for the very first time.

He’s here to evaluate our Saint John Community’s application to be named the world’s top intelligent community of the year. This, after having been named one of the world’s Top7.

For the last number of months and weeks, I have been coordinating an action-packed 2-day itinerary for Lou. Nearly 20 different get-to-know-us activities involving well over 200 people. The main objective is to validate the authenticity of our Top7 application and impress upon the ICF why Saint John is worthy of a being named #1 at the ICF Summit in New York in June.

Saint John has a decent chance to be named the world’s top intelligent community of the year!

This year, three Canadian cities were named into the Top7. Saint John has a legitimate chance at the overall title. We’re a city in transition, from blue collar to “white collar with blue stitching”; we are an emerging market as far as the ICF is concerned; our foundation of broadband investment is impressive, even today; and we have dozens of solid examples of innovation, which just happen to support the main theme of the ICF for 2012.

Check out the activities and experiences planned for Louis Zacharilla on March 29 & 30, 2012:

Welcome Breakfast “Community Overview and PlanSJ through the ICF lens”

Telegraph-Journal Editorial Board “Telling the Intelligent Community Story”

Visit to Prince Charles School to see the impact of BCAPI, PALS and the Boys & Girls Club “Partnerships breaking the cycle of poverty”

Visit to the Saint John Community Loan Fund and joining an Enterprising Women class “A city in transition”

Lunch at the City Market – “A Typical Uptown Saint John Lunch Experience – Saint John’s start-up culture” hosted by Gerry Pond

Acadia Broadcasting Radio Station Interview: 97.3 The Wave “All about the ICF”

Intelligence Led Policing Orientation “Making our Community safer through innovative crime reduction measures”

Centerbeam Place“Transformation of a historic city block into a centre for innovation & creativity – Bricks & beams & FibreOp: A playground for innovators”

Handworks Art Gallery“Saint John’s thriving arts & culture scene”

Community Reception at Happinez “Saint John’s next generation of creative movers & shakers”

Thought Leader Dinner at Opera “Big ideas: working together to move our Community forward”

History, Tourism & Recreation Breakfast “Attracting people to Saint John for centuries to live, work & play”

Island View School“iPods & technology: empowering our children for tomorrow”

Private Residence “Using technology in the home to create a playground for innovators”

University of New Brunswick Saint John Campus, Dalhousie Medicine New Brunswick and the Canadian Rivers Institute “Tucker Park: a collaborative centre for research and innovation”

Top7 Intelligent Community Luncheon “Bringing together public, private and not-for-profit to build an Intelligent Community, province, nation”

Intelligent Community Summit Briefing “How to prepare & what to expect from the ICF Summit in New York”

Saint John Transit “Energy efficiency for a cleaner, greener, smarter Community”

Irving Oil Ltd. Refinery Control Centre “Technology & innovation in Canada’s largest refinery”

I have been fortunate through my role as Communications Officer at Enterprise Saint John to have been given the responsibility of planning these two days. But I didn’t do it alone – I had huge help and support from Nancy Moar and Lori Jensen with the City of Saint John. Lisa Hrabluk, our gifted writer who prepared out Top7 application has also contributed significantly as a highly valuable resource in planning Lou’s itinerary. There are lots of other people I need to thank who have donated their time and effort to this cause. This I will do separately.

I have learned many things about the wonderful and incredible things people in Saint John are doing – such as School District 8′s teaching of Kindergarten students to learn French by their peers through Skype; how micro loans and reading buddies transform families from survival to celebration; and how technologies developed here, enabled by our “highway of glass” are being applied across the globe to advance such industries as health & life sciences and tele-communications technologies.

Coinciding with the end of Lou’s visit is the end of my role as Communications Officer with Enterprise Saint John. I’m spreading my wings as a Marketing and Communication Consultant under the name of Comeau Marketing.

This is somewhat fitting. Enterprise Saint John is all about supporting entrepreneurship and inspiring people to do what you love, and love what you do.

The ICF is about enabling people to do things smarter, better. In my transition, Enterprise Saint John is being incredibly supportive of my new venture, and I will continue to work in the coming months to support Saint John’s bid as the world’s most intelligent community.

Wish us both luck.

Cheers,

Christine

By day, I’m a lawyer who practices in the intellectual property and technology law field, so this announcement had obvious implications for my work. But it was also great news from a personal perspective. After hours I sit on the board of FUSION Saint John. I chose this avenue of community work because it aligns with my beliefs about the potential of my city, and allows me to make a direct contribution to making Saint John a better place to live, work and play.

Moreover, I’m a born and raised in Saint John, who decided to come back here to start both my career and my family. Like many other young professionals, I once believed that bright opportunities were only found in big cities, but with every year that passes living and working in Saint John, I become more and more aware that such is not the case. Though the work itself may be different, in many ways I’m not that different from the ICT professionals who are choosing Saint John as their home base. I’ve been able to meet and learn from some of Canada’s most well-regarded legal professionals, and have been able to find a niche and build a practice around work that I find interesting and engaging.

“Settling in Saint John has been far from just settling.”

I had the opportunity to participate in the Top7 Stakeholder Workshop put on by Enterprise Saint John. After spending the morning at the workshop and learning more about the city’s road to innovation, I became even more convinced that Saint John belongs in the Top7. From intelligence led policing to new and exciting innovations, Saint John has it all!

Business & community leaders collaborated in November 2011 on the Top7 Application – Saint John would be awarded that designation in early 2012.

After meeting the people working in this industry and hearing their stories, the news that Saint John has been named one of the world’s Top7 Intelligent Communities came as little surprise to me. I’m happy to see my city taking its well-deserved place in the spotlight with other global leaders in ICT, and believe that there is no end to the opportunities that can arise from this designation.

That Saint John has been recognized as a global tech hot spot signals to me that the world has realized something that we should be acknowledging more often: Saint John is a place that offers great quality of life and exciting, interesting career opportunities. As someone who is closely observing the pace at which our ICT sector is growing, it’s become obvious to me that the unique blend of quality of life + quality of work found in Saint John is part of the reason for the vibrant, innovative ICT sector we’re becoming known for.

Saint John will be vying for the top ranked position – the Intelligent Community of the Year, which will be named in June, 2012 in New York City.

All of this makes it a truly exciting time to live, work and play in Saint John!

propelICT is on a mission to develop the next generation of New Brunswick-based high growth technology firms. We believe that evolving the Entrepreneurial State of Mind and leveraging proven business methodologies and development procedures will truly enhance the success rate of our mission and those startups fortunate enough to participate in Launch36. Building and sustaining innovation and entrepreneurialism is the key to growing and building a better New Brunswick. The question that needs to be answered is how can New Brunswick support and create an environment that foster’s the Entrepreneurial State of Mind?

Launch36 is undoubtedly the answer. Entrepreneurs flourish when engaged and surrounded with like-minded people in an optimal environment. Start-up Accelerators offer direction (or an independent mentor to bounce ideas off), stability in times of change and above all else a delivery path to bring business concepts to market faster, smarter, more efficiently and at a lower overall cost. Launch36 offers Entrepreneurs the optimal environment for successfully launching their business.

Launch36 includes a Lean Canvass workshop facilitated by Ash Maurya that will provide start-up founders with the methodology and language to think, speak, and behave entrepreneurially about their business concepts. Lean Canvass focuses on identifying a business problem, creating a solution to that problem, demonstrating and validating the solution and then building and scaling a product and product offering. The Launch36 Accelerator will leverage the Running Lean methodology to fast track the business development process for Start-up Founders.

Running Lean focuses on a blended Product and Market based approaches to Product Development. Launch36 will delineate this blend and provide clear guidance and support as Founders evolve through the Business Development process and prepare for market readiness. The Launch36 Accelerator, will follow a rigorous 5-month program where you and your team will benefit from a Peer & Mentor based agenda designed to:

Validate your product/market hypothesis

Design and create customer-centric solutions

Build a minimum viable product

Demonstrate the ability to achieve scale and/or revenue growth

As a start-up entrepreneur, pitching the value proposition of your business may be the most important aspect of your skill set. In the case of many start-ups, perfecting the “Pitch” is a critical success factor in the long term viability of their business. I spoke with a young entrepreneur earlier this week and when they were gathering seed capital, they were literally pitching their business three to five times a week to a variety of investors. Perfecting the “pitch” is a critical success factor for a young start-up. An application that solves a problem is a project, an application that you can repeatedly sell and scale is a product. In most cases, the difference between the two is not technical superiority, it is superior marketing. Launch36 will focus on perfecting your pitch and product demonstration. Articulating how your product’s value proposition is delivered into a market segment is critical for showcasing potential market demand, financial metrics and eventually securing capital investment. From designing and building a concrete product demo to delivering and accentuating the value proposition of your product, Launch36 will provide support, guidance and a platform to practice and perform your pitch.

Demo Day puts the entrepreneur in front of potential venture capitalist, mentors and local business leaders. With constant practice and refinement, the Launch36graduate will elevate to excel in the delivery of their unique business concept.

Launch36 is a key piece in the foundation of propel’s value proposition to New Brunswick based start-ups. However, perhaps the most important thing propel does through this process is work with start-up founders on their dreams and ideas. Leveraging a mentorship model gives founders access to those who have truly walked a mile in their shoes. The progression to an Entrepreneurial State of Mind will only be heightened by access to mentors with personal experience in the development and articulation of new products. Only Launch36 provides this foundation.
